September 11 | Week 2: Faith and Trust
What Will I Eat, Drink, And Wear?
Matthew 6:25-34
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?
28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you–you of little faith?
31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Bruh…Don’t Worry About It!
1. What does Jesus tell us not to worry about?
I should not worry about “my” life – what I eat and drink. Additonally, Jesus commands me not to worry about my body or clothing.
2. How does he use the birds and the flowers to make his point?
The birds are not worried about their bank accounts or their job/career. Furthermore, God clothes the fields with flowers more splendid than Solomon’s wardrobe. Therefore, worrying about these things is completely pointless – and faithless.
3. Verse 27 asks what worry actually adds to your life. What is the answer?
Worry adds absolutely nothing to my life. If anything, when I worry I lose life because worrying (stress) has been proven unhealthy!
4. What is the difference between the way the world handles worry and the way a disciple should?
“The World” is defined by Jesus as those who have “little faith” and who are “pagan” (godless). Interestingly, those who are “in the world”, faithless, and “pagan” run after all these things – meaning worrying about life, food, drink, body, and clothes.
Because He Cares For Me
1 Peter 5:6-7
Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
1. What are we told to do with our anxiety? The scripture says to cast all of it onto God.
2. Why can you hand it to God? What does the end of verse 7 say about him? Encouragingly, God cares for me. I can trust him with every single issue, woe, or concern.
God Will Lift Us Up In Due Time
APPLICATION: Worry is saying you do not trust God with something. Write down every worry on your mind right now. One by one, pray over each and leave it with him. Do not pick
them back up.
- My mothers cancer and her being baptized into Christ.
- Our children’s spiritual condition. Firstly, our son is in his first year of discipleship and high-school. He is wrestling through a lot. Secondly, our daughter is on a campus filled with the worst kind of persecutors – detractors and divisive individuals with something to prove.
- God calling us back into leading a region/church. Adjunctly, I am concerned about my wife’s health challenges in light of this.
- Our financial debts.
