“May the LORD answer you when you are in distress; may the name of the God of Jacob protect you.” – Psalms 20:1
God spared us – we locked down our WHM infrastructure behind a VPN-only setup – we doged a bullet.

God’s Firewall of Prayer – Reload Daily
While working as a Sr. Systems Engineer at WDPRO (Disney) every week we’d have “SOCWAR” “Service Operations Center Weekly Assessment & Review” where every second of downtime, every system error, every deployment mistake, resulted in charges (financially) against given business units like Network Engineering, Dev Teams, QA Teams, Sys Ops (my team), and so on. Everyone was higly accountable we were always after “five nines” meaning 99.999% uptime. Every single day I’d commute from Thousand Oaks to Glendale (about 1-1.5 hrs depending on traffic) and pray hard about excellence on the job and to have a positive spiritual impact there. God’s Firewall of Prayer needs to be reloaded daily – in the least.
Pray For Excellence & Ownership
SOCWAR was sometimes a “WAR” of blameshifting, rationalization, and doging responsibility. Honestly, it was not always like that but it is understandable because it is hard to take full responsibility. Who naturally wants to look bad, own fault, add more work, and/or cause their team a “chargeback.” In an environment where 1 minute of downtime on some of these systems is a loss equivalent to a team members’ annual salary, the stakes were very high. I learned the value of excellence and the necessity of ownership of the entire system – from the code itself to the BGP routing. That’s what a System Engineer owns – the whole system. It cannot be just the “software” or just the “servers” and their configuration – but the entire packet flow from client to service and back.
Pray In The Honor Of Responsibility
It has always been impossible to predict the landscape of stability and security. Furthermore, with the advent of AI, attack vectors and system compromises are rapidly shifting. There are certain things we must be certain of like being attacked, compromised, and systems will critically fail. It is never a question of “if” but only of “when.” Our disaster recovery plans will be tested, and if you are a Systems Engineer, you will be accountable. When the lights go “off” you’ll be the one they call. That is both the honor and the responsibility and where real “salt” is found.
Servants Driven By His Purpose & Prayer
We serve as Systems Engineers, Software Developers, Systems Administrators, Website Managers, Producers, Creators, and much more. We have these roles because we have the talent and/or drive to serve, to build, to create, and to protect. Plan for the worst, yet pray for the best. (Isaiah 32:8) Reflecting on this today,. God protected us and God answered prayers about this Global Internet Ministry. Let’s continue to plan and to pray for whichever part of the proverbial wall we are building for the modern-day Jerusalem of the Sold Out Movement.
Amen for God’s Firewall of Prayer.
Let’s “keep it up!”
